If you are already a signed musician or band your song will be released even faster, and is sometimes written solely for you to perform. When these recording are made, yes you have the opportunity to record your whole band playing at once with a single microphone that is feet away. However, most bands would record their songs in a studio way, recording each instrument separately as to be later able to control their volume.

This is how multitracks are made. The bands record their parts separately for the studio or audio masterer to later alter if need be. It's all the same in concerts except a sound engineer controls the volume and sometimes the effects of the instruments via a soundboard. Still they are separated into channels. When you get the files for a multitrack, it could be just two files. An acapella partnered with an instrumental is in fact a form of multitrack. However most of the ones you get will be separated further.

To fully understand why someone would want these you'll need to look at some of the uses multitracks have. Multitracks are used in music-rhythm games most often.

The games work by giving you a midi track to reproduce on an instrument of your choosing.

As for Guitar Hero, you'd get a plastic guitar with 5 frets sometimes 10 with the extra frets near the body of the guitar that you would hold down to prepare a note or chord, and strum the strum bar to play the note or chord you had prepared.

If you played the note or chord at the time it reached you, the guitar would play. However, if you missed the note, the guitar would be silenced until you played a note properly. The mechanics behind this are based off of multitracks. Guitar, Bass, and Band "extras". Band is constantly played without any silencing unless you change the volume settings. Guitar is played until you miss a note.Multitrack recording MTR —also known as multitrackingdouble trackingor tracking —is a method of sound recording developed in that allows for the separate recording of multiple sound sources or of sound sources recorded at different times to create a cohesive whole.

Multitracking became possible in the mids when the idea of simultaneously recording different audio channels to separate discrete "tracks" on the same reel-to-reel tape was developed. A "track" was simply a different channel recorded to its own discrete area on the tape whereby their relative sequence of recorded events would be preserved, and playback would be simultaneous or synchronized.

Multitrack recording was a significant technical improvement as it allowed studio engineers to record all of the instruments and vocals for a piece of music separately. Multitracking allowed the engineer to adjust the levels and tone of each individual track, and if necessary, redo certain tracks or overdub parts of the track to correct errors or get a better "take. Multitrack recording was much more than a technical innovation; it also enabled record producers and artists to create new sounds that would be impossible to create outside of the studio, such as a lead singer adding many harmony vocals with their own voice to their own lead vocal part, an electric guitar player playing many harmony parts along with their own guitar soloor even recording the drums and replaying the track backwards for an unusual effect.

In the s and s, computers provided means by which both sound recording and reproduction could be digitizedrevolutionizing audio recording and distribution. In the s, multitracking hardware and software for computers was of sufficient quality to be widely used for high-end audio recordings by both professional sound engineers and by bands recording without studios using widely available programs, which can be used on a high-end laptop computer.

Though magnetic tape has not been replaced as a recording medium, the advantages of non-linear editing NLE and recording have resulted in digital systems largely superseding tape. Even in the s, with digital multitracking being the dominant technology, the original word "track" is still used by audio engineers.

Multi-tracking can be achieved with analogue recordingtape-based equipment from simple, lates cassette-based four track Portastudios, to eight track cassette machines, to 2" reel-to-reel track machinesdigital equipment that relies on tape storage of recorded digital data such as ADAT eight-track machines and hard disk -based systems often employing a computer and audio recording software.

Multi-track recording devices vary in their specifications, such as the number of simultaneous tracks available for recording at any one time; in the case of tape-based systems this is limited by, among other factors, the physical size of the tape employed. With the introduction of SMPTE timecode in the early s, engineers began to use computers to perfectly synchronize separate audio and video playback, or multiple audio tape machines.

In this system, one track of each machine carried the timecode signal, while the remaining tracks were available for sound recording. Some large studios were able to link multiple track machines together. An extreme example of this occurred inwhen the rock group Toto recorded parts of Toto IV on three synchronized track machines. Moreover, on computer-based systems, the number of simultaneously available recording tracks is limited by the number of sound card discrete analog or digital inputs.

When recording, audio engineers can select which track or tracks on the device will be used for each instrument, voice, or other input and can even blend one track with two instruments to vary the music and sound options available. At any given point on the tape, any of the tracks on the recording device can be recording or playing back using sel-sync or Selective Synchronous recording.

This allows an artist to be able to record onto track 2 and, simultaneously, listen to track 1, 3 and 7, allowing them to sing or to play an accompaniment to the performance already recorded on these tracks.

They might then record an alternate version on track 4 while listening to the other tracks. All the tracks can then be played back in perfect synchrony, as if they had originally been played and recorded together. This can be repeated until all of the available tracks have been used, or in some cases, reused. During mix down a separate set of playback heads with higher fidelity are used.

Before all tracks are filled, any number of existing tracks can be "bounced" into one or two tracks, and the original tracks erased, making more room for more tracks to be reused for fresh recording.Below is a list of multitrack projects which can be freely downloaded for mixing practice purposes. Audio files are essential to modern audio production and are relied upon for successful collaboration, tracking, editing, mixing, remixing, and mastering. However, lack of proper file preparation or confusion about what files to use will net a lot of frustration and wasted time, money, and progress.

Under the umbrella of audio files are two commonly used and confused kinds—multitracks and stems. Though they are related, they're not the same. Understanding the differences prevents mixups when it comes to requesting and sending files. Multitracks are the recorded separate, individual elements of an audio production. Some may be mono, while others are stereo. They may have been recorded from microphones or direct inputs, programmed in a sequencer, or arranged in a sampler.

In many cases, dynamics processors such as compressors and time-based effects such as delay and reverb are excluded to allow flexibility for the mixing engineer. The image below shows a folder of multitracks. Stems are stereo recordings sourced from mixes of multiple individual tracks. For example, a drum stem will typically be a stereo audio file that sounds like all of the drum tracks mixed together.

In most cases, additional processing such as equalizationcompressionand time-based effects is included to ensure that the sound achieved by the mixing engineer is committed. The image below shows a folder of stems generated from a mix of the multitrack files displayed in the previous image. As you can see, multitrack sessions typically have far more tracks than stem sessions. Whereas the track counts in multitrack sessions range from twenty to a couple hundred, stem sessions may contain only four to twenty tracks.

Multitrack sessions are created and expanded upon in the recording, editing, and mixing processes, while stem sessions are more commonly created after all the recording, editing, and mixing is finished—there are exceptions, of course. Stems offer unique advantages over multitracks for certain applications, but they also present limitations when compared to multitracks.

Consider these pros and cons of stems when deciding if they should be created and used. Setting up an overdubbing session will be faster with four stems versus 40 multitracks. Fewer files, fewer hassles usually. Example Scenario: A California-based artist wants to feature a Vermont-based vocalist on a track and needs to send the reference music to the Vermont artist.

What should be sent, stems or multitracks? Stems, you say? You nailed it. However, if the Vermont vocalist wants to sing along with quieter drums and louder instruments for pitch referencethat is easily accomplished with stems. Plus, even if the computer used by the Count of Montpelier is weak in comparison to the strong SoCal supercomputer, it would surely be more likely to handle four audio files than forty of them. As a result, stems offer reliable simplicity when transferring between collaborators and engineers, regardless of which DAW is used.

The stems may already be affected with EQ and reverb and adjusted to the preferred levels from the previous session. Since that work was taken care of, it leaves less work for the mix engineer.

Au contraire! However, there are times in which stems are preferred by mixers see example scenario 2. Example Scenario 1: After stems are sent to a mixing engineer, the artist requests to have the drum overheads panned closer together, the floor tom panned further right, and the snare bottom turned down several smidgens. But if the mixer was given a stereo drum stem rather than individual drum files, the requests cannot be accomplished.

If stems had been created at the time of the original mix, it would be simple and painless to pull them up and make the new mix. Remixes are fiercely common and popular.
